Your husband needs prayers from YOU more than from anyone else. You are united in Christ, so building him up in prayer will affect his life, your marriage, and even your own heart. You also know him better than anyone, so you can determine the details of his life that need prayer the most.
Let me tell you a story about how I learned the importance of praying for my husband.
A woman from my church gave me a wonderful book for my bridal shower several years ago. It’s called The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian.
Each chapter is about a different area of your husband’s life that you can pray for. They are relatively short, so it’s easy to read a chapter a day. Each chapter ends with a prayer over him, and then she lists several verses and passages that affirm what was said in the prayers.
I started reading it soon after we were married, but stopped after about 5 chapters. I had gotten busy and just forgot about it after a while.
Then almost a year and a half into our marriage, I found it on our bookshelf. Every marriage has its ups and downs, and at this point we were down. We had had an argument and were just trying to get through the hurt. So when I saw it on the bookshelf, I decided to give it a try again.
I thought praying for him could help me get what I wanted – which was for him to realize that he needed to straighten up and accept the blame. I thought it could make my husband change.
But as I read those chapters and prayed, something else was happening.
I noticed that by praying for him, my heart was softening toward him. I began to realize that I was at fault just as much as he was. My prayers were changing me just as much as they were changing him.
A quote from page 13 of Power of a Praying Wife says, “[Praying for your husband is] a way to invite God’s power into your husband’s life for his greatest blessing, which is ultimately yours, too.”
Through the grace of God, we got over that bump in our marriage. We forgave each other and were drawn closer to each other and to the Lord.
Because of that experience, I can attest to the power of prayer. God hears us and is watching over us.
I didn’t want to pray for my husband during that time. However, Matthew 5:44 says to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Let me just say that he is not my enemy, nor does he persecute me. My point in quoting this verse is that God commands us to pray for someone even when we don’t want to.
And Ephesians 6:18 says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
I encourage you, dear friend, to start praying for your husband. God is powerful and can do mighty things in your marriage. Pray for him through every situation. You are united in Christ, so as you draw closer to the Lord, you will draw closer to your husband.
I highly recommend Power of a Praying Wife. Another great book that I love is called Thirty-One Prayers for My Husband by Jennifer Smith. If you haven’t read them, you need to.
If you have any testimonials about how prayer has worked in your life, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
Let me leave you with 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.
“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

It is so easy to pray for those we love when things are good, but yes during hard times it’s easier to argue and hold resentment.
That’s so true. But during those hard times might be when they need prayer the most.
This is so good. You’re absolutely right. We are constantly rushing to get things done, take care of our families, feed them, keep them clean, keep our homes clean, get work done, the list goes on and on. But we need to make this a priority. I’ll have to check out those books!!
That’s so true. It’s easy to make everything else a priority, but this is important, too. Keeping up our relationships with our husbands is so vital because when we’re old and our children are grown, who is going to be by our side? Not our children, but our husband.
this is so kinda. You should also check out the book series where you both get ur own books and its a daily prayer you say for one another. its so sweet!
I mentioned the book “Thirty-One Prayers for My Husband” in the post, and it’s great! It comes with a book called “Thirty-One Prayers for My Wife” as a set, so that might be what you’re talking about. They’re lovely books.
Beautiful post! Prayer is the foundation to any sound relationship, and the bringing our family life, and our partner into our devotional time is a wonderful way to thrive through any hardship. <3
I agree! And thank you!
Prayer is so major especially through those rocky points, I have really learnt to put our marriage and my spouse in prayer everyday. It’s reallt hard but, that’s how I know we make it through each day it’s with God leading us.
That’s great that you have learned to do that every day! And it’s true that God is the one watching over us every day and in every situation.
Having read this I believed it was really informative.
I appreciate you taking the time and energy to put
this content together. I once again find myself personally
spending way too much time both reading and
posting comments. But so what, it was still worthwhile!
Thank you! I appreciate any time someone reads a post and comments.
